The Solar Challenge Morocco is in full swing and we’re busy day and night with optimizing our race strategy and preparing for the next stage. Apart from the obvious action points like getting Green Spirit ready and making sure we comply to all race regulations, there are many bigger and smaller challenges that need our attention. Luckily, HUAWEI helps us out with multi-functional high-end technology. The tech-giant not only provides us with smartphones, but also with laptops and smartwatches to ensure an optimal workflow and prevent unforeseen problems along the way.

Huawei P40 Pro
The P40 Pro is Huawei’s latest high-end smartphone that is of great value during the Solar Challenge Morocco. Obviously, all of our team members already own a smartphone, so it is valid to ask: “why use more?”. The reason for this is that every convoy car needs one assigned phone so it is always clear how to communicate with each other and which phone to use. Besides that, we need the most reliable technology during the race and with the P40 Pro, we now have access to one of the best devices on the market. During the Solar Challenge Morocco, we mainly use the P40 Pro for navigating and communication purposes. With the help of our Huawei flagships we’re sure to navigate to the finish line.

Huawei Matebook D14
After Green Spirit herself, laptops are probably the most important piece of technology during the Solar Challenge Morocco. Depending on the convoy car, we need them for a variety of tasks. Whereas our communication group uses them to, for example, edit photos and write blogs or press releases, the chase car needs a laptop to monitor Green Spirit’s performance and determine the race strategy. Besides that, every convoy car needs to be able to access our ‘roadbook’: During our strategy trip in late July, we mapped out the entire race route based on road quality, potholes, sharp turns, possible media and control stops and landscapes like cities, mountains and deserts. All this information is crucial for us during the race and needs to be easily accessible.

All these tasks and activities are no problem for the Huawei Matebook D14! Thanks to its superlight weight and handy size, we could easily travel with it to Morocco and it also won’t weigh us down during the race. At the same time, it is able to run all of the programs and software that we need in the middle of the desert. The matte screen makes working in light environments a pleasant experience and the long-lasting battery will get us through the day even without power supply in the convoy cars. All in all, the Huawei Matebook D14 is the perfect device to use for us during an exceptional event like the Solar Challenge Morocco.

Huawei Watch 3 Active
Fitting to the P40 Pro, our solar car drivers also use the Huawei Watch 3 Active during the Solar Challenge Morocco. It is important that the chase car can communicate to the solar car driver at all times during the race, not only to give directions but also to check their mental and physical state. However, the cockpit of Green Spirit is pretty small and doesn’t allow our drivers to move around much to scramble for a phone. If our primary communication channel fails, the smartwatch represents the perfect back-up. Since the Huawei Watch 3 Active is equipped with a sim-card slot, it can be used just like a normal smartphone. Actually, it can even do more! The watch also offers a variety of features that can be used to monitor the health of the solar car driver during the race. After all, the cockpit of the car can heat up to 50˚ C which can become dangerous if the driver is not monitored constantly. The Huawei Watch 3 Active can detect if the wearer’s skin temperature is too high, which is one of the first signs of a heat stroke. Besides that, it can measure the driver’s heart rate through LED lights and four photo-diodes. In case of emergency, the driver can use Huawei’s built-in emergency mode that will immediately contact a designated contact or emergency services. Of course, our safety officer will also be there to help the driver as soon as possible. Even before the race officially started, our drivers could prepare with the smart watch as it records sleep quality and stress-levels. Only a calm and well-rested driver will have enough energy to drive 2500 km through the desert!
